If you’re planning a family photo session here in Aberdeenshire (and first of all — great choice!), one of the first things to think about is location. Luckily, we’re absolutely spoiled for choice. From rugged coastlines and castles to peaceful parks and woodland to charming fishing villages and silver streets of Aberdeen, this part of Scotland offers the perfect backdrop for every kind of family.

Here are some of my top recommended spots for a family photo shoot in and around Aberdeen and the Shire:
Haddo House & Country Park
Just outside Ellon, north of Aberdeen, Haddo House is a beautiful location for a family sessions. The stunning house, tree-lined paths, lake, and wide open spaces deliver variety — plus, there’s plenty of space for little ones to run around between shots.
Best for: Classic, elegant backdrops with a relaxed country feel
Why I love it: The autumn colours here are unreal — and there are beautiful spots all year round.

St. Cyrus Beach
This place has my (and many other people's) heart forever. It's hosted us for BBQs on the move, accommodated many sunny days digging in the sand and windy walks at 2pm sunset in January.
For a more natural, windswept vibe, you can’t beat St. Cyrus Beach. The dramatic dunes, long stretches of sand, and golden light in the evening make this a dream location. It’s perfect for barefoot adventures, candid moments, and even dogs are welcome!
For a bonus tip you can visit the newly-reopened Visitor Centre and learn more about the Reserve and its residents.
Best for: Relaxed, natural sessions with movement and emotion
Top tip: Dress in layers — the beach can be breezy even on warm days!

Hazlehead Park
Hazlehead Park is a stunning location, just on the outskirts of Aberdeen city, with colourful flower beds and open greenery. There are plenty of paths that can tuck your shoot safely away from the public and it offers great variety between autumnal colors and the fragrant rose garden.
Best for: Timeless, storybook-style family portraits
Bonus: The walks lead to natural, lifestyle portraits that will make even most reluctant models feel engaged

Woodlands
Here in Aberdeenshire we are truly spoiled for woods - Dunnottar or Fetteresso by Stonehaven, many beautiful forrests by Banchory and Alford, woods serve the most beautiful setting for a family shoot any time of the year and it's without doubt my favorite type of a setting.
Best for: Families who love nature and aren't afraid to get their knees muddy ;)
Good to know: Wear wellies and prepare for an adventure!

Dunnottar Castle
With over 260 castles, stately homes and ruins, our small slice of the country is known as 'Scotland's Castle Country. ' It has more castles per acre than anywhere else in the UK! For something truly unique and quintessentially Scottish, head to the coast. We can capture dramatic coastal views with Dunnottar Castle silhouetted in the background - it's the most stunning castle in the whole of the shire for me!
Best for: Families wanting a mix of seaside and Scottish heritage
Watch out for: The weather! But moody skies can actually look stunning in photos.

Your home!
Wait, whaaaaaat? Yes! Your home!
A family photoshoot at home is special because it captures authentic, personal moments in the place where real life happens. Home sessions allow everyone to feel more comfortable and relaxed, leading to natural, meaningful photos. There’s no need to worry about weather, as it’s always the perfect setting indoors, and the unique details of your home - from favourite rooms to cherished toys - add a personal touch to the shoot. Ultimately, an in-home session tells your family’s story in the space where love and memories are made, making it a truly heartfelt experience.
Best for: Families with very young children and special events
Pro tip: Don't worry about clutter too much and I'll send you my handy-dandy prep guide ahead of the shoot so that you can take the stress off getting your home picture-perfect ;)

No matter where we shoot, what matters most is you and people you bring to the session. These locations provide the beautiful backdrops — but the real magic comes from your connection, warm hugs, and love as a family. If you're not sure which spot suits your bunch the best, just reach out - I’m more than happy to help you choose the right location for your vibe and the season - as you can tell, I've photographed in quire a few ;)
